What is Bisexual Awareness Week?

Bisexual Awareness Week is an annual celebration that aims to promote the visibility, rights, and acceptance of bisexual people. Every year, the event takes place from September 16 to September 23.

Why bisexual visibility matters

Despite the fact that bisexual people make up the highest percentage of LGBT+ people they are often not as visible in the media or wider society as other parts of the community. This invisibility can lead to bi people experiencing greater levels of stigma, shame, and stereotyping from within and outisde the LGBT+ community. All of which makes it harder for bi people to come out and feel safe to be themselves. Our own research found that seven in ten (71%) of bisexual young people felt ashamed about their sexuality.

Schools and teachers can play a crucial role in promoting inclusion in the classroom by celebrating Bisexual Awareness Week. This year, to make things easier for teachers, we’ve curated a free pack of practical resources to help educators talk about bisexuality, and start conversations about we can all be better allies to bi people.

Ideas for schools to celebrate Bisexual Awareness Week

Not sure where to begin? Well, here’s three ideas to get you started.

First, you could point out some books with bisexual characters and storylines that young people could read. These could include: Becky Albertalli’s “Amelia, If Only” and M.K. England’s “Roll for Love” for KS3/KS4, while Sam Mills’ “Uneven: Nine Lives that Redefined Bisexuality” suits KS5.

Or what about putting up some posters (available to download from our free resource library) in the corridors of famous bisexual trailblazers? Would your students know that Kit Connor, Cynthia Erivo and Abbi Aitken-Drummond are all bisexual?

Finally, you could use one of your form times during Bisexual Awareness Week to discuss some ways your pupils could better support and show up for bisexual people. Our form time resouces includes a video from one of the hundreds of LGBT+ young people aged 18-25 who volunteer for us talking about supporting bisexual people. This can take mamy forms including encouraging pupils to not doube someone’s bisexuality or tackling the myth that bisexuality is a “phase”.

By signign up to Just Like Us’ resource library, schools can access LGBT+ inclusive resources tailored to Bisexual Awareness Week, and explore themes like representation, inclusion, and allyship.
