Educating teenagers about the existence and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people is entirely age appropriate. A common misconception is that LGBT+ inclusive education is controversial or unsuitable — in reality, at secondary school level, it means having honest, open conversations about identity, respect, and allyship in a way that reflects the real world pupils are already navigating.

Secondary school and college is a time when many young people are actively exploring their own identity, and some will already know they are LGBT+. Others will have LGBT+ friends, family members, or peers. Inclusive education at this stage goes beyond simply acknowledging that LGBT+ people exist – it can involve discussing lived experiences, challenging stereotypes, and creating a school environment where every student feels safe and seen.

Just as teachers approach other sensitive topics, such as mental health, relationships, diversity, with appropriate care and nuance for their age group, LGBT+ education is no different. It is not sex education, and discussions are always tailored to be relevant and appropriate to pupils’ age and maturity. Just Like Us’ school programmes and resources adhere to government guidance and the national curriculum too.

It’s also worth considering the bigger picture: secondary school pupils are approaching adulthood, and will go on to work, live, and build relationships in diverse communities. Some will have LGBT+ colleagues, managers, or family members and some will be LGBT+ themselves. Research shows that LGBT+ inclusive education is linked to better wellbeing for all pupils, not just those who are LGBT+, making it beneficial for every young person in the classroom.
