You can also get started on our free e-learning course, How to set up a Pride Group, which explains the process of getting set up from scratch, evidence on their impact that you can share with SLT and ideas on how to make your group a success. You can go at your own pace and it takes under an hour in total to complete.

Yes, definitely — the programme is designed for you too. It’s ideal for both total beginners and schools that already have some form of group they’d like to develop further. As a member, you’ll get access to fortnightly resources, termly training, a network of school staff running groups, and dedicated support for running your LGBT+/ally club. Many of our most active Pride Groups started out as something informal and have grown with our support.

You’ll be joining 1 in 4 UK secondary schools already on our Pride Groups programme and you’ll receive access to:

  • Resources and inspiration to run your group landing in your inbox every fortnight – from book recommendations and podcasts to national competitions to ensure group your group flourishes
  • Access to our staff WhatsApp community for staff running Pride Groups across the UK, where you can get support, share ideas and ask for advice
  • Termly Student Leader training – each term we’ll run a new virtual session to empower your pupils in taking ownership of their groups, each session is run twice within a term to increase availability (past session slides then get uploaded to the portal for you to use at your leisure), keep an eye on your inbox for date announcements.   • Direct 1:1 support from our team via calls or emails
  • The chance to take part in Allies Week, a UK-wide celebration where hundreds of Pride Groups celebrate allyship with our support, activities and resources
  • Access to our resource library including materials from the past four years and new resources every year for Anti-Bullying Week, Allies Week, LGBT+ History Month, Pride Month and Rainbow Friday

Starting with the evidence is usually the most effective approach. 96% of teachers in our Pride Groups programme have reported that their group improved the wellbeing of pupils — that’s a compelling stat to put in front of a headteacher. It also helps to emphasise that the programme is completely free, requires no prior expertise, and comes with ready-made resources and training so the workload on staff is minimal.

If your SLT has concerns about parental or community reaction, it’s worth noting that Pride Groups are open to LGBT+ pupils and allies alike. They’re about creating a safe, welcoming space for all young people to learn and work together to make positive change in their school – pupil voice is an important aspect and perhaps an important issue to your SLT.

You might also point to the broader school culture benefits: research shows that LGBT+ inclusive environments improve the wellbeing of all pupils, not just those who are LGBT+.

By joining our Pride Groups programme, you’ll get ready-to-go activities, inspiration and advice on what to do. You’ll also get access to our staff WhatsApp community where 1,000+ staff running Pride Groups across the UK share what they’re doing in their sessions and what’s worked well.

You can also ask pupils what they want to do in their Pride Group, or create a suggestions box where pupils can write down ideas or questions they have that can then be answered the following week.
Some of the Pride Groups in our network get creative with community building activities, arts and crafts, have discussions based on news articles, or develop longer-term projects like planning events for Allies Week and Pride month.
