LGBT+ inclusive art teaching resources for KS1

Just Like Us

Published: March 13, 2025

Just Like Us has launched new LGBT+ inclusive art teaching resources for primary schools.

The art resources include slides, activities and a lesson plan focusing on LGBT+ artist Keith Haring, and are designed for teaching key stage 1 (KS1).

The new resources allow pupils to learn about Keith Haring, his art and his LGBT+ identity. The KS1 resources also explore how to share opinions about art, and give pupils an opportunity to create their own art inspired by his colourful and whimsical style.

Other LGBT+ inclusive art teaching resources from Just Like Us include a key stage 2 (KS2) lesson on LGBT+ artists from across movements and time periods, key stage 3 (KS3) resources on exploring identity through art, and a key stage 4 (KS4) lesson looking at depictions of same-gender love in art, and the different ways in which this has been depicted across time and culture.

How to download free LGBT+ inclusive art teaching resources:

If you are a staff member at a UK primary school, secondary school or sixth form college, you can access Just Like Us’ free resources by following the below steps:

  1. Sign up for free here.
  2. You’ll then receive an email granting you access to the resources.
  3. Then, browse and download resources in our school resource portal.

Just Like Us’ school resource portal offers free, LGBT+ inclusive resources across the curriculum, for all key stages from EYFS to KS5.

Independent research has found a link between positive messaging about being LGBT+ in schools and pupils having better mental health, regardless of whether the pupils are LGBT+ or not.

LGBT-inclusive environments at home and at school are also linked to better outcomes for LGBT+ young people, from their mental health to their relationships to their optimism about the future, that last into adulthood.
