Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, is looking for young adults to volunteer to speak in schools in Wales.

Real-life LGBT+ representation matters, especially for school pupils. Volunteering with Just Like Us’ Ambassador Programme is a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of pupils across Wales.

When young people see themselves reflected in the world around them, it creates a sense of belonging. For LGBT+ young people, this representation can be life-changing.

Volunteer in Wales

If you are LGBT+ and age 18 to 25, you could join Just Like Us’ Ambassador Programme.

By volunteering your time as an ambassador, you’ll:

  • Use your voice: Volunteer by speaking in schools, workplaces and the media
  • Develop skills: Build skills through training, mentoring and workshops
  • Find community: Be part of a network of LGBT+ young people across the UK

Recently, Welsh Just Like Us ambassadors Edward and Awen spoke at a Welsh-medium school, covered by BBC Cymru. They shared their stories of growing up LGBT+, providing relatable representation and making the school community safer and more welcoming for all pupils.

By becoming an ambassador, you can help foster a more inclusive, open, and safe school environment for all.

Just Like Us school talks are free in Wales

Volunteering with Just Like Us offers the unique opportunity to directly engage with schools and pupils across Wales, and Just Like Us’ LGBT+ school talks have now been made completely free for Welsh schools.

Ash (he/him), a trans Just Like Us ambassador in Wales, said: “Growing up in the Welsh valleys, I had absolutely no idea what a transgender person was. It was never mentioned in school, in public or by family members.

“A lack of education is a huge issue. That is something that I wish to change in the future by advocating and telling my story.”
