Just Like Us

Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, is looking for LGBT+ people aged 18 to 25 to volunteer in Birmingham and speak in schools about allyship.

Just Like Us is running in-person volunteer training in Birmingham on 10 and 11 May 2025.

Attendees will learn all they need to know to become a fully trained Just Like Us Ambassador alongside other like-minded LGBT+ young adults in a fun, safe and relaxed environment.

Just Like Us’ unique Ambassador Programme allows LGBT+ young people to benefit from a range of opportunities, including career mentoring, skills workshops, media opportunities and community building with other LGBT+ young people, as well as being trained and supported to speak in schools about what it’s like growing up LGBT+, helping to prevent anti-LGBT+ bullying.

Volunteer in Birmingham

If you are LGBT+ and age 18 to 25, you could join Just Like Us’ Ambassador Programme.

By volunteering your time as an ambassador, you’ll:

  • Use your voice: Volunteer by speaking in schools, workplaces and the media
  • Develop skills: Build skills through training, mentoring and workshops
  • Find community: Be part of a network of LGBT+ young people across the UK

Wallis, a Just Like Us ambassador who grew up in Birmingham, said: “Growing up in Birmingham was good fun, but despite the thriving gay quarter in town, LGBT+ visibility was lacking overall. I knew what the words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’ meant, and my mum had a gay friend, but that was as far as my understanding and the representation I had access to went, until well into my teenage years.

“I feel disappointed that, even growing up in the UK’s second city, I still felt lots of uncertainty and heard lots of misconceptions about the LGBT+ umbrella that impacted how I thought about myself for a long time.

“I’m so glad to have found Just Like Us, as I’m not only becoming the representation that was missing for my younger self, but also solidifying the feeling that I belong within the LGBT+ community.

“Just Like Us are, simply put, a lovely bunch doing amazing work for LGBT+ young people and I’m so proud to be part of the work they do.”

“I feel like I’m making a direct positive impact in helping Birmingham become a more LGBT+ friendly community.”

— Izzy, a Just Like Us Ambassador

Izzy, another Just Like Us ambassador in Birmingham, said: “Not only has being an ambassador for Just Like Us helped me understand myself better and become more confident in myself as a person, but by giving in person talks and sharing my story with those those who are growing up in Birmingham currently, I feel like I’m making a direct positive impact in helping Birmingham become a more LGBT+ friendly community.

“As an ambassador for Just Like Us, I have had so many incredible experiences. I’ve been able to meet so many awesome people who are also ambassadors, I’ve been able to walk in the Birmingham Pride Parade, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the Pride Groups that have been set up in schools through Just Like Us’ Pride Groups Programme and much more!

“Being an ambassador is something I love, it’s an incredible experience that has taught me a lot and has helped me make a positive impact on the world around me at the same time!”
