A free form-time resource on UK trans trailblazers has been released for secondary schools by Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, ahead of International Transgender Day of Visibility (31 March).

Transgender Day of Visibility is marked internationally as a day to celebrate the trans community and their achievements.

The free, form time resource centres on trans trailblazers in the UK, both historical and current, including 1950s racing driver Roberta Cowell, veteran and Mount Everest climber Jan Morris, filmmaker Fox Fisher, and model Munroe Bergdorf.

Pupils are able to discuss what it means to be a trailblazer, and what it looks like to be an ally to trans people.

The form time resource can be downloaded for free by signing up for School Diversity Week, as well as all of Just Like Us’ resources, including subject-specific lesson plans, posters, videos, assembly slides and more for EYFS to KS4.

School Diversity Week 2023 will take place from 26 – 30 June.

Amy Ashenden, interim CEO of Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, said: “Our free, educational resource for Trans Day of Visibility is an informative and joyful celebration of the achievements of some incredible trans trailblazers in the UK, and is a great way for schools to learn about allyship.

“Young trans people – like all young people – deserve to see themselves in the role models they hear about at school, especially at a time when only 19% of trans secondary school pupils feel optimistic about their futures.

“We know from Just Like Us’ research that LGBT+ inclusion in schools benefits the wellbeing of all pupils, whether or not they are LGBT+, and we hope that by using our resources, schools can show all young people that being LGBT+ is something to be celebrated.”
