The podcast interview sees Dr Maryhan interview Just Like Us’ guide author Amy Ashenden on how parents can be allies to the LGBT+ community.

Just Like Us’ LGBT+ Guide for Parents Carers is designed for all parents, carers and wider family members – whether your child is LGBT+ or not. The guide will help you become a better ally and answers the most common questions straight parents ask about LGBT+ topics.

The guide was created following consultation with more than 100 parents and LGBT+ young people who shared their experiences with Just Like Us.

Dr Maryhan Munt, host of the podcast How Not To Screw Up Your Kids, said: “Just Like Us have given us all – parents, educators, neighbours, employers, and the wider community – a clear understanding of what LGBT+ allyship REALLY is, and it’s in our actions not just in the words we use.

“I am already challenging my own inherited stereotypes of those who identify as LGBT+ through well-informed education, so I can truly embody allyship.”

How Not To Screw Up Your Kids podcast

Amy Ashenden discusses on the podcast how all parents can be allies, whether or not they have an LGBT+ child.

She explains: “Most people listening won’t have an LGBT+ child but your child will be hearing gay as an insult and probably saying it as well and picking it up because they want to fit in and don’t know how to challenge it.

“So it’s really important that parents feel empowered to lead the way and say: ‘By the way, you know, when I was at school, gay was sometimes used as an insult and I’ve heard it’s a thing that’s still happening sometimes now – do you ever hear it? Do you know that we don’t use that word negatively? Do you know that we think being gay is OK in this family?’ And leading them in being allies too.”
